One of our most important tasks ahead is to improve the setting of the Wall. In many places inappropriate development has encroached upon it, impeding the view and in some cases damaging its structure.
We are pleased to say that we’ve now won a significant victory to remove one of the worst examples – the set of advertising hoardings along one of the most visible stretches of the Wall, in Middleborough, at the bottom of North Hill. They dominate views of the Wall as visitors approach the town centre from the mainline train station.
The posts which support the hoardings are sunk into the Wall and when the wind blows they move, weakening its structure and threatening the Scheduled Ancient Monument. Our Chair, Cllr Henry Spyvee has been working with the Borough planning department and the Museums Service to have a ‘discontinuation notice’ served on the owners of the boards, advertising company JC Decaux. The company appealed but the Planning Inspector sided with Borough Council and ordered the signs to come down.
